Loisel Sugar House
Nicholas Loisel and his wife, Celeste Eleonore Provost Loisel, built the Loisel Sugar Mill and Plantation in 1830. Dr. Harvey Bussey purchased the Plantation and Sugar Mill after Nicholas died in 1856. In 1909, his son J.C. Bussey sold the Loisel Sugar Mill to the Pharr brothers, who renamed it Loisel Sugar Company. In 1941, the Teche Sugar Company purchased Loisel Sugar Company and operated it until 1958. They sold it for junk in 1959.
Loisel Plantation
After J.C. Bussey’s death in 1922, his wife Nannie Radar Bussey married Robert Burleigh. Nannie died in 1940, and Robert married Sara Ruth Jackson in the late 1940s or 1950s. In 1974, Sara sold Loisel Plantation to Dr. Nelson Boudreaux. Since then, the house has changed hands several times before Jeff Weiss and David Bailey, the current owners, generously donated the original Bussey Land Grant and 18 ledgers to the Iberia African American Historical Society Center for Research and Learning for digitization and research.
I used one of the payroll ledgers to create a mini-exhibit on permanent display at The IAAHS Center for Research and Learning.
